I am astonished! Here I thought that Monthly Review was a socialist, marxist-informed journal and then it publishes Lukin Robinson's "The Ontario Election and After." Where is an analysis of the reality of governing in a non-sovereign province within a capitalist state? Where is the comparison of the Ontario New Democratic Party's performance during a period of economic crises in comparison with that of social democratic parties in Great Britain, Germany, France, and New Zealand under similar circumstances? Where is an exposition of the difficulties created for the NDP by its Cold War origins which led to its eschewing of extra-parliamentary political activity and to its organizational and ideological weaknesses. And finally, where is the acknowledgement that the 1990 NDP victory, a fluke based on a 38 percent popular vote, produced an inexperienced caucus and a weak front bench? This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
