AbstractMuch has been made of the great promises of the information age and the information highway as a powerful new form of communication that will change our lives for the better. Self-proclaimed visionaries such as Bill Gates and Nicholas Negroponte envision a new golden age in which humanity is globally connected, with information at everyone's fingertips, with intelligent electronic agents liberating us from the mundane tasks of our daily lives—automatically paying our bills and retrieving electronic newspapers, making our coffee, and so forth.
