Thinking and Acting Dialectically: C.L.R. James, The American Years

Abstract

This is the first university-sponsored C.L.R. James conference at which I have been asked to speak. I dare say it's also the last because my approach to James is quite different from that of the professional intellectuals who organize and attend these conferences. The G.L.R. with whom I worked for two decades was, first and foremost, a builder of a revolutionary political organization. For him, being part of such an organization was the best way for the revolutionary to know reality and to become an integral part of the process of changing it.
