The Triumph of Capitalism: Three Responses

Abstract

I read with sadness Robert Heilbroner's article, "The Triumph of Capitalism" in the January 23, 1989, New Yorker in which he espoused a new, major theme of right-wing ideology in this country. Many others have joined his triumphal celebration of capitalism and funeral possession for socialism. By joining this clique, Heilbroner has abandoned a lifetime of distinguished work; "The Triumph of Capitalism" is inconsistent with Heilbroner's own extensive writings on the nature and dynamics of capitalism and its relationship to socialism.
