Abstract

We were interested in William Hinton's thoughtful analysis of the results of recent economic policies in China, especially as they affect the former model brigade at Dazhai (MR, March 1988). We, too, revisited Dazhai in May of 1987 and would like to add a few comments on what we see as the political significance of the Dazhai phenomenon. Our small group of eight foreigners, some of whom are long-term residents of China, was fortunate to obtain information on the sensitive topic of why Dazhai was discredited and how the people of the village feel about it.
