The Alternative to Stagnation

Abstract

In his column in The Nation of May 10th, Alexander Cockburn, perhaps the U.S. left's most effective journalist/polemicist, writes: The success of the Reagan administration so far as news management is concerned—news management being its central preoccupation—is its conditioning of the media to "see" and not to see. To "see" terrorism, but not to see the administration as promoter of terror; to "see" a Reagan economic boom, but not to see the five flat quarters since the fall of 1984 that spell economic failure; to "see" a conservative younger generation, but not to see the omens and realities of new insurgency.
