Abstract

MR last March contained a statement by Jeremy Brecher and response by David Montgomery under the heading "Crisis Economy: Born-Again Labor Movement?", together with an editorial invitation for brief contributions to an ongoing dialogue. Brecher and Montgomery have forced me to think back over crises that have altered relations of class and race in industrializing America during the past century; and the editors' invitation tempts me to compress this sequence, and conclusions that seem to flow from it, into a summary which I hope may fit within the space limitations.
