Abstract

In the early 1960s, when southern and northern clergy marched, led, and preached their congregations into the storm of civil rights activity, many Americans first awakened to a practical understanding of what U.S. blacks had long recognized: the historically progressive role that religion had played in their struggles for freedom and dignity. Twenty years later, it is more and more commonplace to see a radical Christian contingent in a prominent place in marches, demonstrations, and confrontational protest.
