Abstract

"There are no political prisoners in America," say the right-wing ideologists every time the question comes up. "The people who are in prison deserve to be there." This pat answer, however, does not survive concrete analysis. To understand fully the function of the American prison system we need only analyze the historical trends of incarceration and discover how they are related to the economic conditions of the country at large.
