Abstract

Not surprisingly, the 1978 summer issue of MR on China Since Mao stirred up unusually strong reactions from readers. Not only has the number of letters and article-length commentaries received in response to the pieces by Neil Burton and Charles Bettelheim been extraordinarily large; even more noteworthy has been the intensity of feelings aroused by the analysis set forth in Bettelheim's contribution entitled "The Great Leap Backward."
