Beyond Malcolm X

Abstract

In many places throughout the country this week there will be small meetings celebrating the 52nd birthday of Malcolm X. Some will be attending these meetings out of respect for the challenge which Malcolm posed to the black movement of the early 1960s to go beyond civil rights and grapple with the question of revolution. Others will be using Malcolm to justify the narrow nationalist sects which they are still trying to build. Still others will be quoting Malcolm in the same way that most Marxists still quote Karl Marx. They will repeat what Malcolm said as the "Word" which we must not question.
