Yousef Al-Haythem, in his letter on "MR and New Outlook" (MR, October 1974), bases his criticism of MRon a principle which, he insists, "all serious socialists and Marxists must agree upon," that of "unconditional support of the right of all nations to self-determination." Most revolutionary socialists in the United States would unquestioningly support this principle, rhetorically at least. But I would suggest that the notion that nations have an absolute right to self-determination is sometimes misleading, often meaningless, and occasionally reactionary. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
