Abstract

There is a very striking contrast to be drawn between, on the one hand, the state of revolutionary politics in the last twenty-odd years, and the state of Marxist thought on the other. The picture presented by revolutionary politics in this period is by no means all negative; but it is nevertheless a rather somber picture, with only an occasional patch of light. In regard to Marxist thought, on the contrary, there are few areas where substantial advances have not been made, one way and another: in this instance, the general picture is remarkably positive.
