Abstract

In the decade following the Cuban Revolution there was a continent-wide confrontation between the United States, with its allies among the Latin American propertied groups, and a broad assortment of revolutionary forces, backed in various degrees by the popular classes. In each country where a major revolutionary force appeared to be gaining support and preparing to take power, the United States and the native Latin American ruling classes, aided by the armed forces, intervened and prevented the victory of a popular government.
