Today, all over the United States, millions of people of all colors, all classes, and from all ethnic groups are rallying to the defense of Lt. William Calley, the cold-blooded murderer of helpless women, children, babies, and old men at Mylai. Spearheaded by the most rabid and racist supporters of the Vietnam War, the mounting "Free Calley" hysteria is sweeping into its ranks many who willfully delude themselves that, by defending Calley, they are defending a helpless individual against the Establishment when, in fact, they are helping to make a hero out of a Hitler. (Discussion by James Boggs, Committee for Political Development, All-African Peoples Union, Dan Aldridge, Afro-American Committee Against Racist Wars, and Lynn Turgeon.)This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
