Abstract

It is pretty generally agreed by now that the Cultural Revolution in China is an event of world-shaking import. And yet much of what is being said and written about it, at least in the sources to which we have access, is uninspired and uninspiring. Endless accumulation of details yields little useful or usable knowledge; steady proliferation of hypotheses contributes more to confusion than to understanding. Why?
