I am in general accord with Stephen H. Fritchman's enthusiastic review of Barrows Dunham's Heroes and Heretics (MR, May 1964). This book is a brilliant piece of work and stands out uniquely as a reliable and inclusive socio-political history of dissent in the West. To progressives, radicals, socialists, Communists and anyone else who refuses to conform to the Establishment, this volume gives an invaluable understanding of their prototypes in the past and their own role and possibilities in the present. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
