Abstract

August 29, 1963, marked the fiftieth anniversary of an important event—the first redistribution of land in Latin American history. The revolutionary leader who engineered this history-making act was Francisco Jose Mugica; its beneficiaries, the peasants of Matamoros across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas.
