If one were to believe the American press, Washington, far from trying to overthrow Fidel Castro, ought to be doing everything possible to preserve his regime as a horrible example to the rest of Latin America of the failures of socialism. Moreover, instead of forbidding Americans to go to Cuba to see for themselves, our leaders should be organizing free tours as a way of spreading knowledge about the abject condition to which five years of revolution have reduced a once happy and prosperous people.This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
