Abstract

Commentators on the Sino-Soviet schism have offered various explanatlons—economic, geopolitical, historical, and psychological—for its genesis. They appear generally agreed that ideological differences rationalize the conflict but do not explain it. Yet ideological strife does have its own logic and impact; the fact that it rationalizes national economic or political differences does not make it any the less genuine as an expression of policy. Hence it requires examination on its own terms.
