The conception of a communist society in which all property is owned in common is, of course, an old one, dating back at least as far as Thomas More's Utopia, written early in the 16th century. But what the world understands by communism today is almost entirely a product of Marxian thought and practice. For this reason, attention will be confined here to what may be called Marxian communism.
