The Negro Problem in the U.S.—An Outsider's View

Abstract

As the author explains in the opening paragraph of this article, he was moved to write it not by a study of the Negro problem in the United States but by a study of the problems of the Third World. He was, he tells us, struck by similarities suddenly thrown into sharp relief by the Birmingham crisis. It is probably safe to assume that what he has written is an explicit formulation of ideas which have occurred to many people, both inside and outside the United States, as they have watched the dramatic development of the Negro struggle in recent months.
