In the March issue of MR, we wrote that "as a tribute to Tawney's memory, we plan to publish in an early issue a collection of characteristic quotations from his two best known works." After reading The Acquisitive Society and Equality again, however, we decided that one long continuous passage would serve the purpose better. The following is from the chapter entitled "The Vicious Circle" from The Acquisitive Society, pp, 131-138. We hope that it will inspire MR readers to read or re-read the works of one of the great English socialists of our time. —The EditorsThis article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
