On March 31, 1953, the Association of American Universities made public a statement entitled "The Rights and Responsibilities of Universities and their Faculties." The timing of this document was not accidental, coming in the midst of avid investigations by congressional committees of alleged subversive beliefs and associations of educators. In the past several months the newspapers have carried, almost daily, accounts of teachers and professors being dismissed from their positions because they refused to answer, under compulsion and oath, questions concerning their beliefs and associations, past and present.This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
