The word socialism is used in this article to mean the collective public ownership and administration of those parts of the economy which are of common concern to the community as a whole. In this sense the people of Connecticut own and administer the state highways, and the people of the United States own and administer the post office and the national forests. Highways, post offices, and forest reserves are publicly operated for public benefit. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
