Abstract

The editors of the prestigious journal Science cannot be accused of indifference toward the public's perception of scientific theories. In the December 23, 2005, issue they named Darwinian evolutionary theory as the breakthrough of the year. Of course, the original breakthrough occurred a century and a half ago, but since Darwin's time scientists have made great strides in furthering the Darwinian project by refining our understanding of how evolution works, and last year, in particular, advances were made on many fronts. While genuine scientific progress was made within evolutionary studies, the resurrection of "creation science" as "intelligent design" and the renewed attempt by the Christian right to inflict such repackaged religious nonsense on our nation's school children in the guise of science played no small part in directing the editors' selection.
