Abstract

This is the welcoming address to the participants of the Fifth Annual Conference of the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy, held in Vienna in November 1994 and organized jointly with the Socio-Economic Research Unit of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The background and context of the conference are woven into the text of the welcoming address. The title is added with the agreement of professor Levitt. It is anticipated that a selection of the presentations at the conference will be published in book form. MR readers will be kept informed. In the meantime, they are cordially invited to join the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy which, in our opinion, is doing extremely valuable work on the basic problems of, and challenges to, domestic and global societies as the century and millennium draw to a close.
