Abstract

Algeria's current crisis has found its way to the front pages of many U.S. and European newspapers and magazines. Not surprisingly, the situation of Algerian women within that crisis and the assault on their rights by Algerian Muslim fundamentalists do not figure as central issues in the media portrayal of this moment in Algerian history. Press reports and those of major human rights organizations have shared this gynopia, and this particular aspect of their blindness has drastically altered the vision of Algeria offered for Western consumption, obscuring the nature of Algerian fundamentalism and the possible reasons for indigenous opposition to it.
