Abstract

When I met Cornel West a decade ago, just before the publication of his first book, he had a special interest in reassessing Marxist thought as it applied to the North American context. As an African-American scholar grounded within African-American culture and institutions, Dr. West was keenly aware of the historic failure of the North American left to address adequately the task of making Marxism appropriate for the unique requisites of North American culture and society.
