Abstract

The train pulled out of Grand Central Station and I felt free…free to leave behind me the stiff, stuffed furniture and the stifled lives of my Depression childhood. "Good-bye to all that shit," I thought, "Hello to myself…whoever I might be…out on the Mississippi... among riverboat workers…living in a union world of my own choosing."
