Abstract

The year 1989 has seen an orgy of self-congratulations as the U.S. bourgeoisie perceives as proven the failure of communism and the triumph of capitalism. These two themes are always presented together although in a differing mix, one writer stressing the failure, another the triumph, but everyone covering both themes in the same discussion. There is, as it were, a pattern of ideological unity. Any critique is constrained by that pattern to deal with both themes; further, it can only sample the vast amount of material—an incessant outpouring of news, columns, articles, special reports, and long essays as well as several books.
