"If you think the system is working, ask someone who isn't," reads the sign on the Mon Valley Unemployed Committee banner. That message summarizes the shocking experience of many U.S. citizens who grew up in the post-Second World War period, expecting that if they worked hard they could dramatically improve their lives.
