Abstract

On May 11, Charles Bettelheim submitted his resignation as president of the Franco-Chinese Friendship Association, citing growing misgivings about events in China since the death of Mao Tse-tung and disagreements with the attitude of the dominant faction within the association toward the post-Mao Chinese leadership and its political line. Professor Bettelheim's letter of resignation was published in somewhat abbreviated form by Le Monde, and through this and other channels reached a wide international audience interested in developments in the Peoples Republic.
