Abstract

"Islam is our religion; socialism is our economy; democracy is our politics," was the slogan on which Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) mobilized the masses of West Pakistan and scored an astounding victory in Pakistan's first general elections held in December 1970. If a slogan were to be adopted for the present policies and the style of the governing of Mr. Bhutto's regime, it would read something like this: "Radicalism is our rhetoric; confusion is our tactic; oppression is our profession." Mao's dictum, "Serve the people," which was included in the PPP's arsenal of cliches, could be appropriately modified to read "Serve the imperialists."
