Abstract

The Far East was a power vacuum after 1945. Japan, come-lately Asian competitor for supremacy in the area, had grabbed Chinese territory in 1895, defeated Tsarist Russia ten years later, taken over Manchuria, gained naval parity in 1922, invaded China and inaugurated its co-prosperity sphere in 1932, thrown out the Western powers in 1941-43, and in 1945 had surrendered unconditionally, accepting dismemberment of its empire, a drastic change in its form of government, and military occupation by the United States armed forces.
