I feel that Paul Sweezy misinterpreted my position in his reply to my communication on Chile (Monthly Review, March 1972). Let me enumerate the points of confusion. "Consolidation," as I have heard it and read it "in the context of present political debates in Chile," assumes many distinct meanings, depending on who is speaking or writing. I have seen it used both in the sense that Sweezy and Benavides use it and in the sense that I use it. As I stated, this is strictly a semantic question and peripheral to the issues of our discussion.
