Abstract

At various times in the history of complex societies, established social orders are challenged by growing discontent and the ferment of new ideas. Unthinkable thoughts become tenable. Sacred institutions are profaned. The very nature of the moral order comes under attack. Old ways of thinking, talking, and doing things are threatened by new forms of consciousness.
