Abstract

When I came back from West Bengal in May, I was more than ever convinced that this is one of the most crucial, most battered, least understood areas of the world. It has been rather brushed aside in the literature of the international Left. I wrote you a long letter to give you some idea of the context—the political conditioning to which Bengalis are subjected before talking about their political prospects. I have torn it up: all the words and figures, or any photographs that one might add, are too big (or too small) to have much meaning.
