With this issue Monthly Review marks its twentieth anniversary and enters its third decade of publication. The new volume now beginning is the first without Leo Huberman, co-founder and co-editor until his death last November 9th. As his colleague over these years, I am painfully aware that but for him there would be no MR today. Apart from everything else, it was his courage and dedication and hard work that enabled us to surmount the obstacles and difficulties which stood in the way of building up from scratch a completely independent socialist magazine in the conditions which prevailed in the United States in the late 1940's and early 1950's. In a very real sense MR is his creation, and I hope it will be his monument as long as it continues to exist.
