Abstract

Many years ago, when I first visited Latin America, I heard of "el peligro yanqui." The unilateral Monroe Doctrine, plus dollar diplomacy, implemented by Marines, hatched the phrase. Today the Yankee Menace extends far beyond Latin America. It is planet-wide: as Professor Frederick Schuman noted recently, "the United States is more feared and hated than any other nation on earth."
