Abstract

With a curious topsy-turvy of words and ideas U.S. News and World Report of November 14th, 1966, began its summary of the United States economic scene by asserting that "defense orders offer a guarantee that production will stay high." Orders placed at factories for defense products have risen sharply. A big gain has been recorded for the airplane industry. "The upsurge in defense and aircraft orders brought the orders reported by factories to a new high.…The order flow indicates the importance of war as an influence in the production boom."
