Abstract

A jet plane flight from New York to London in six hours and ten minutes is disrupting and distressing. Even more disturbing is the fairly short journey by car from London's airport to the terminal in the heart of the city. When I took this same ride three years ago, the airport freeway was in process of construction. Today it is in use. For a dozen miles from the airport it is a real freeway, built partly at ground level and partly as a viaduct. Then it loses itself in the maze of narrow crooked London streets, with halts at traffic lights at every other corner.
