"Amerika über Alles" was the title of the first-page leading article of the Paris daily Le Monde on October 8, 1965. The subject of the article was the revamping of West German foreign policy. Public statements which Prime Minister Erhard and Foreign Minister Schroeder have made recently clearly indicate the new course which German foreign policy will take in the transition period immediately ahead. During the early postwar years, a defeated, devastated West Germany submitted to foreign military occupation, gladly accepted aid from Washington, and permitted United States capital to play a vital role in the rehabilitation of the German economy. The consequence has been immediately beneficial to the West German economy. In two decades the country has risen from the ashes of defeat to become the third nation of the world in industrial production and the second in international trade.
