Abstract

In April 1964, we visited Lorraine Hansberry in the hospital to tell her about the MR 15th Anniversary Committee's campaign to raise money to send MR Press books to Negro college libraries. We asked her to speak at the MR "birthday party" to be held on May 13 where announcement would be made of the total amount contributed. She said that though she was under doctor's care, she would leave the hospital on the night of the meeting to speak at the MR party. She spoke at the meeting and returned to the hospital. On January 12, 1965, Lorraine Hansberry died of cancer. She was 34 years old. In memory of one of America's most distinguished playwrights and of a rare human being, we print below the speech she gave. The title is ours. —The Editors
