Abstract

The unusually heavy mail evoked by our latest discussion of the Sino-Soviet conflict ("What Do the Chinese Want?" in the October issue) testifies to a profound interest in this subject, apparently shared by all sections of the Left. On analysis, the mail also testifies to a remarkable disparity of views among people who consider themselves to be socialists, on just about every aspect of the conflict. This situation clearly calls for continuing discussion. And the objective of the discussion must be not only to determine the rights and wrongs of the debate but, perhaps even more important at this stage, to get a clear understanding of what the real issues are.
