In the September issue of MR, Samuel C. Florman asked whether the questions and doubts he raises could possibly be resolved by others. A careful rereading of his article convinces me that his chief problem is to distinguish between illusion and reality, and that the difficulty he has stems from three specific sources. These are perfectionism, the lack of a point of view, and the prejudging of the case he presents. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
