Abstract

Through the centuries, on one pretext or another, strong nations have crossed the frontiers and occupied the territory of their weaker neighbors. Ordinarily such invasions have led to local fighting, and sometimes to major wars. The mid-July occupation of Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean by United States and British armed forces is only the latest in a long series of such episodes.
