Eugene Victor Debs was born a hundred years ago, on November 5, 1855. He was a great American and a great man, incomparably the greatest figure the American socialist movement has yet produced. He hated oppression, he loved truth, he fought for what he believed in with unflinching courage. He set us a magnificent example of which we, as Americans and socialists, can be enormously proud. We stand straighter and hold our heads higher because of him. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.
