Abstract

On a Saturday afternoon in December, 1943, a sturdy-looking, middle-aged man with an expression of thoughtful pugnacity stood before an audience at the Hotel New Yorker. He was the chairman of a symposium on Soviet science, sponsored by what would now be called a Communist-front organization. The man was Harold C. Urey, the Nobel Prize-winning chemist.
