Abstract

During the past year, the Truman administration has announced broad "plans" for the mobilization of United States resources for military preparedness. At the same time, American consumers have been warned that they will have to tighten their belts to make possible this costly arms program. Likewise, Great Britain's Labor Government has decided to freeze "socialist" gains by imposing a ceiling on welfare expenditures in the interests of a rearmament program acceptable to Washington.
